Dear Children’s Guild DC Charter Parents,
Thank you very much for beginning this journey with The Children’s Guild DC Charter School and being part of our founding group of parents. During these first few weeks of school, we have been getting to know you and your children while putting into practice our initial plans for the vision for our school. We look forward to seeing you at the Harvest Night, a celebratory evening that we are planning for the week of October 26th. You will be receiving the details on this later on in the week.
We want to let you know that Friday, we accepted the resignation of Principal Hillary Garner. Our very experienced assistant principal Bryan Daniels, who has been with The Children’s Guild for the past fourteen years, will assume the position of acting principal. We are actively engaged in the search for a new principal. In the interim, please know that Mr. Daniels has the complete support of the core Children’s Guild DCPCS administration team; Ms. Tracey Smith, Dean of Instruction, Ms. Jacqueline Frye, Dean of Student and Family Life, and Ms. Jill Howlett, Coordinator of Special Education. In addition, Kelly Spanoghe, MA, Ed.S., Vice President of Special Education and Student Support services and Dr. Duane Arbogast, Vice President of Educational Services and Chief Operating Officer for Schools, both of whom are seasoned educators with many years of experience will be supporting the administrative team. Ms. Spanoghe’s expertise is in special education and Dr. Arbogast is an expert in academic instruction. Please be assured that this leadership team will provide a seamless transition.
On another note, we appreciate your patience as we work through the growing pains of opening a new school. In these few weeks we’ve identified several key areas on which we know we can improve: transportation, the TranZed enrichment program, student support center, special education, and the website.
We have identified where the delays occur that make pick-up and drop-off time problematic. We will be deploying a new system on October 5th. The new schedule can be viewed here for your reference. Questions about transportation should be directed to Mr. Daniels. Again, please be aware that this new schedule will begin on Monday, October 5, 2015.
THE TRANZED ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
As of Monday, September 28th, we are partnering with the YMCA for management of the TranZed Enrichment Period. This period will focus on helping students get homework done, fun, recreational clubs, and other activities that further the school day experience and learning.
THE STUDENT SUPPORT CENTER
The Student Support Center is the place where we help students who are having difficulty managing their classroom behavior. Many times we find out they lack conflict resolution skills, or need more large muscle activity or have something trigger their feelings that flood them so they have difficulty processing information or following directions. We also use the MSD Room (Multi Sensory De-escalation Room) when students need assistance to regulate their own behavior.
We have reviewed each child’s Individual Education Plan and 504 Plans. We have conducted classroom observations and are identifying the resources needed to meet the students’ needs.
The website is in the process of being updated to reflect the changes mentioned above. We are also making an update for the calendar. We are also working on deploying a communication platform called Living Tree. Through this application we will be able to communicate via the app, email, and SMS. We will build groups based on grade level, classroom teachers, and bus routes. This will allow TCGDC to reach families quickly and with ease and allow parents to communicate with faculty and staff easily.
Thank you again for choosing The Children’s Guild DC Public Charter School. We look forward to seeing you at the Harvest Night, the week of October 26th. Look for information on the dates and times which will be coming from Mr. Daniels.
